After altering protection settings, the next stage is to review work procedures to minimise the effects of arc energy.
This can include minimising live working, racking breakers with the boards dead, utilising remote racking mechanisms, remote opening and closing of breakers, reducing access to switchrooms and opening parallel feeds before working around apparatus.
When it becomes unreasonable to use the above methods strict instructions should be laid down for staff to follow. These will include manufacturers operating instructions for switchgear, safety distances to be observed, communication with control rooms and the wearing of PPE.
Remember that none of the above reduces arc energy, it just minimises exposure of staff should a fault occur.
