The construction can affect the performance and the durability of the garment, the following points should be noted;
1. FR garments should have elasticated cuffs to prevent flames from spreading up the inside of the sleeves.
2. External pockets should have a flap over them to prevent molten metal or burning debris falling inside them. The only exceptions to this are a rule pocket on the leg and pen pocket on the arm.
3. An extra layer of material over the shoulders provides extra padding for comfort and also provides an extra layer of protection to the wearer where there is no air gap between the garment and the wearer.
4. Extra layers over elbows and knees provide added comfort and also increase the wear of the garment. Garment life can also be extended by just replacing the outer patch before it wears through.
