Facial Protection is cruicial to allow people to survive the effects of an electric flashover. It achieves two functions. First, it protect the face, eyes and mouth from being burnt. Second, it protects the wearer from breathing in hot air and debris.
The face visors issued, must be tested against the high temperatures of an electric arc, general purpose visors issued for grinding will melt.
However, arc rated visors usually have a lower impact rating, so standard safety spectacles should be worn underneath to protect the wearer should flying debris damage the visor.
Visors are available in fully enclosed hoods offered by Westex or helmet mounted visors offered by North or Bacu Dalloz.
A Nomex cloth cap with visor is also available if the risk assessment does not indicate the need for a safety helmet.
Up to 10 cal/cm², the visor can be clear. At arc energies greater than this, the visor will have a tint to protect the eyes from the brightness of the arc.
